The art of mosaic design, invented by the Greeks, has been practised for thousands of years. The skills were passed on to the Romans, who spread mosaic art throughout their huge empire. In due course they became renowned for their superb Byzantine walls and vault mosaics. The 19th century brought a revival of mosaic art,
a revival that has continued to this day.

Modern developments in materials and techniques are evidence that mosaic art is very much alive
in the new Millennium. Computer technology is
a great aid for designing contemporary mosaics and is increasingly used for this purpose.
